Gintowt trained after the war at the engineering school in Szczecin and then at Gdańsk University of Technology, graduating in 1952, and worked through the state design system that organised Polish architecture under socialism rather than in private practice. With his regular collaborator Maciej Krasiński he specialised in long-span public halls, including the Olivia arena in Gdańsk and the Podpromie hall in Rzeszów, work that depended on close partnership with structural engineers rather than on a personal decorative language. Their best-known building answered a 1959 competition for an arena in Katowice that also had to withstand tremors from the coal seams beneath the city; working with the engineer Wacław Zalewski, they produced a cable-roofed dome resolved as pure structural geometry, among the first tensegrity roofs attempted anywhere at that span. Gintowt later taught at Warsaw University of Technology, serving as dean from 1987 to 1990.
