Limburgs Museum

The museum stands on the line of Venlo's vanished town wall, opposite the station and beside the surviving Keulsepoort, the old gate to Cologne, and Dekkers made the building argue about that. A long curved brick volume stands for the wall that used to be there; a sheer block of steel and glass, holding the entrance and offices, stands for the present. Visitors go down through the brick to prehistory and then climb back across bridges towards the recent past, so that the section does the chronology and the twelve period rooms open off it like the doors of a cabinet. It was the first building Dekkers completed after leaving EGM to set up her own office in Delft in 1998, and it was built for a foundation formed five years earlier from two merged collections that had outgrown their old premises. She returned in 2021 to remodel it.
