Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (Louis Kahn Plaza)

Kahn was hired in 1962 on the recommendation of the same Harvard Business School advisers who helped found the institute, and he built a campus around a single generative geometry: the circle and the square cut into thick brick walls, scaled from a doorway to the nine-metre diameter opening on the library facade that overlooks what is now called Louis Kahn Plaza. The dormitories, teaching blocks and faculty housing all share the same construction logic, brick with concrete tie-beams poured at the springing of every arch, chosen partly because it was what local labor and materials could deliver without imported steel. Kahn continued revising the campus until his death in 1974, and his associate Anant Raje oversaw further construction into the 1990s. In December 2020, the institute told alumni it planned to demolish fourteen of the campus's eighteen dormitory blocks, citing structural decay; the plan drew formal objections from ICOMOS, the Society of Architectural Historians and members of Kahn's own family, and the board withdrew it the following month. The plaza and academic core Kahn built have not been touched.
