Rafael Fernández Ruenes

?–— · Art Deco

Cuban architect who, together with Esteban Rodríguez Castells, won the design competition Bacardí S.A. held for its new Havana headquarters, the two sharing the firm's prize; José Menéndez then carried the winning scheme through construction as the project's architect-engineer. The finished building, completed in 1930, is read as Cuba's fullest statement of Art Deco: a riveted steel frame carries twelve stepped-back storeys to a belvedere crowned by the company's bronze bat, its walls faced in Bavarian granite, glazed terracotta and polychrome tile. Wikidata carries no entity for him; the attribution here follows the Spanish and English Wikipedia articles on the Edificio Bacardí, and his dates are not established in the sources consulted.
