Nieto studied in Madrid and at Columbia, and in 1984 founded Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos with Enrique Sobejano, with whom she has shared authorship of every project since; the two also edited the journal Arquitectura for the Madrid architects’ association between 1986 and 1991. The practice works almost entirely on museums and on buildings that sit on archaeology — the Madinat al-Zahra museum at Córdoba, the San Telmo extension in San Sebastián, the Moritzburg museum at Halle, the Joanneum quarter in Graz — and its recurring device is a cast concrete surface carrying a deep geometric relief that reads as ornament and works as structure or as light control. Nieto has taught at the Universidad Europea de Madrid since 2003 and lectures widely in Europe and the United States.
