A classicist from Lady Margaret Hall who wanted to be a missionary in Africa, learned Swahili for it, and was sent instead to Barishal in eastern Bengal. Langridge founded the Sisterhood of the Epiphany there in 1902 and led it for four decades as Mother Edith, running schools, an orphanage in Calcutta and medical work for women. The Epiphany Church at Barishal — one of the largest churches in Asia — was built from her sketch, inaugurated in 1903, and completed in a second phase overseen by Father E. L. Strong in 1907; the two are named together as its architects. She had no architectural training, which is precisely why she appears in almost no history of the building: an unschooled woman’s drawing is the kind of authorship the record loses first.
