Woinovichgasse 2–4, Vienna Werkbund Estate

The Vienna Werkbundsiedlung was built between 1930 and 1932 in Lainz and shown to the public in 1932 as part of a European housing exhibition; at the opening it was called the largest building exhibition in Europe. Around thirty architects from Austria and abroad each contributed a house or a pair — Josef Frank directed the whole, and Adolf Loos, Gerrit Rietveld, Richard Neutra, Gabriel Guevrekian and André Lurçat all built here. Schütte-Lihotzky was the only woman among them. Her contribution is the double house at Woinovichgasse 2 and 4: two terrace houses of thirty-five square metres each, flat-roofed, rendered, with square windows punched into unmodelled wall. The economy is not stylistic but programmatic — the same argument as the Frankfurt Kitchen she had designed four years earlier, that a dwelling can be reduced to its measured minimum without becoming meaner. Of the original seventy houses, sixty-four survive.
