Seoul Olympic Stadium

Seoul's largest stadium replaced Dongdaemun Stadium, whose 30,000 seats were too small for international competition. Planning began in September 1976; Kim Swoo-geun took the commission and modelled the building's silhouette on the unbroken curve of a Joseon white porcelain moon jar, wrapping nearly 70,000 seats in a single continuous concrete rim rather than the tiered, faceted bowls common to stadium design. Piling started in 1977, the main structure in November 1978, and the stadium opened on 29 September 1984, four years before Seoul hosted the Games it was built for. It staged the 10th Asian Games in 1986 and, in 1988, the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, athletics, the football final and equestrian jumping. Long the home of the national football team, it hosted the side's last match there in May 2000, before the team moved to the newly built Seoul World Cup Stadium, and it stood without a permanent tenant until Seoul E-Land FC moved in in 2015. A renovation plan announced in 2018 would cut its capacity and add a public sky deck.
