Secretariat Building, Chandigarh

The Secretariat is the largest single element of the Capitol: a slab 254 metres long and eight storeys high, wrapped its full length in a continuous grid of concrete brise-soleil that Le Corbusier sized differently on each face to match the sun each elevation actually receives. Two ramps, wide enough for a car, climb the building's end in place of a lift core, and the roof carries a garden and a ventilation stack shaped like the horn motif of the Modulor figure that recurs across the whole Capitol. It was built to hold the ministries of the joint Punjab government of the 1950s, floor after floor of open-plan offices behind the sun-breaking screen, with construction running from the early 1950s to the building's completion around 1958. After the 1966 Reorganisation split Punjab and created Haryana, the two states divided the Secretariat's floors between their administrations rather than each building a new one, and it remains in that shared use today, inscribed with the rest of the Capitol Complex as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 2016.
