Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Church, Makati

Makati in the 1960s was being built from nothing: Ayala land, gridded subdivisions, a new business district, and new parishes to serve them. Saint Andrew the Apostle is the church Leandro Locsin gave Bel-Air Village. The cornerstone was laid on 8 February 1967 and the building opened on 30 November 1968, the feast of its patron, who is also the patron saint of Metro Manila. Locsin took the problem of a large congregation and no columns and answered it with a single folded concrete roof of triangular section, rising from a low ring of wall to one apex, so that the whole interior is one undivided room under a tent. It belongs to the same argument as the Church of the Holy Sacrifice thirteen years earlier — mass over a room rather than mass at the end of one — and it is among the best known of the modern buildings Locsin left in Makati.
