Böhm did not win the competition. Cardinal Joseph Frings, Archbishop of Cologne, whose sight was already failing, had the entries presented so that he could feel the models, liked Böhm's so much that he asked for a second competition on new terms, and the commission finally went to Böhm on the archbishop's personal wish. The design answers a pilgrimage running since 1681 not with a nave but with a street: a broad curving processional approach leads in from the forecourt and widens inside into a church space like a market square, the main altar at its centre and the galleries around it reading as houses full of windows. The outside paving is carried through the doors, and so are the free-standing street lanterns. Built from 1966 and consecrated in 1968, the shell is board-marked concrete inside and out, creased into faceted peaks. German Wikipedia assigns it to Brutalism; it is the second-largest church in the Archdiocese of Cologne after the cathedral.
