Bagsværd Church

The congregational council saw a church Utzon had exhibited as part of a proposal for Farum town centre and asked him for one of their own. His submission of 1968 was made of four sketches: in the first, people stand under clouds on a beach; in the last, the same people are a congregation and the clouds have become the roof. That is exactly what the building does. From the street it is severe and almost industrial — white precast panels, white glazed tile, an aluminium roof, a tight plan of three sections with courtyards between two parallel corridors. Inside, the flat outer envelope is abandoned and a sequence of in-situ concrete shells rolls over the nave, lit from clerestories so that the light appears to come from behind the curve rather than through a window. Funding nearly stopped the work twice; the church was consecrated on 15 August 1976.
