A Bombay architect of the Dawoodi Bohra community whose best-known commission came from across a border he did not cross to live. Merchant was a personal friend of Muhammad Ali Jinnah; when Fatima Jinnah took control of the memorial fund and vetoed the 1957 competition result, she commissioned him directly to design her brother’s mausoleum at Karachi. He also built the Raudat Tahera in Mumbai for Syedna Taher Saifuddin and the Anna Nagar tower at Chennai. His work sits deliberately between idioms — a traditional funerary geometry stripped of ornament and set on a modern reinforced frame — and no movement label is applied to him here, because the published record does not support one and inventing one would tidy away exactly what makes the buildings odd.
