Sandra Barclay

Barclay studied at the Universidad Ricardo Palma in Lima and at the Ecole d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville, and in 1994 founded Barclay & Crousse with Jean Pierre Crousse, first in Paris and from 2006 in Lima. The practice works the Peruvian coastal desert as a material in its own right: buildings are cut out of the ground rather than set on it, mass concrete is coloured to the tone of the sand and left rough, and the sequence of shaded courts and slots does the work that glazing does elsewhere. The Museo de Sitio de Paracas, the Edificio E at the Universidad de Piura and the Lugar de la Memoria in Lima are the best-known results. Barclay was named Woman Architect of the Year at the Architectural Review's Women in Architecture Awards in 2018; the practice holds Peru's Hexágono de Oro.
