Le Corbusier

1887–1965 · International Style

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret took the name Le Corbusier in 1920 and became the central figure of twentieth-century Modernism — the five points of a new architecture, the Unité d'Habitation, the sculptural concrete of his late churches and monasteries. Almost all of that French practice sits behind a Freedom of Panorama block this pool cannot license, so he is claimed here for the one major commission that falls outside it: the Capitol of Chandigarh, the replacement capital Jawaharlal Nehru asked him to design after Partition cost Punjab its old one, Lahore. Corbusier laid out the new city's master plan from 1951 and built the Palace of Assembly, the Secretariat and the High Court in raw board-marked concrete, working the site for the rest of his life alongside his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, the project's resident architect.
