Kavindrarimathana is the only builder of the Khmer Empire whose name has come down to us. A Buddhist serving as chief minister to Rajendravarman II, who ruled at Angkor between 944 and 968, he is named on the doorjambs of Bat Chum as the man who raised that temple, and the same inscriptions credit him with the reservoir of Srah Srang and with the island temple of the East Mebon; the palace from which Rajendravarman governed is also attributed to him. That a court official signed his work at all is extraordinary. The thousand sanctuaries of Angkor otherwise record their royal patrons and say nothing of the people who set the brick. He appears to have died shortly after 960, the year Bat Chum was dedicated.
