Georgette Cottin-Euziol (1926-2004) was born at El Affroun, in French Algeria, and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Georges Gromort, Louis Arretche and Pierre Vivien, graduating in 1956. She returned to Algeria as an architect that year, left in 1961 under threat from the OAS for her support of independence, and came back in 1963; she took Algerian nationality in 1964 and joined the Algerian Communist Party. Between 1968 and 1975 she ran a major construction programme for the new wilaya of Tizi-Ouzou in Kabylia: the provincial prefecture, schools, lycées, a theatre, a cinema and a teacher-training college. She later practised in southern France and, in the 1990s, worked on unbuilt reconstruction projects in Russia and Chechnya.
