Born Karlheinz Weber in Saarbrücken in 1934, he studied architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1954, breaking off for a DAAD scholarship at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1959–60. From 1957 he worked alongside Günter Behnisch and Bruno Lambart, and became a partner at Behnisch & Partner in 1966. It was Weber who, with Frei Otto and Heinz Isler, built the Munich Olympic Stadium competition model from wooden rods and a lady's stocking after a colleague proposed draping one canopy over the whole site — the sketch that became the tent roof. He left the partnership in 1979 and ran his own Stuttgart and Munich office with Fritz Auer from 1980 until his death, building the Recklinghausen Festival House and Theater Hof, and taught at Stuttgart and Dresden. He died in Stuttgart in May 2014.
