Alison Smithson met Peter Smithson at Durham and worked in partnership with him from 1950 until her death; everything either of them built was published under both names. Their competition win for Hunstanton school in 1949, finished in 1954 with its steel frame and services left frankly visible, gave critics the term New Brutalism. They built very little — an embassy, an office building, a school, a few houses, one large housing estate — and wrote a great deal, and their influence ran mostly through Team 10, through the idea of the street in the air, and through a stubborn insistence that architecture should be judged by how people actually occupy it. Alison was the sharper polemicist of the two: her book «AS in DS» and the Smithsons' Team 10 primers shaped a generation's vocabulary far more than their built work did.
