Ali Al-Shuaibi took his architecture degree at King Saud University in 1972 and a master's in urban design at MIT in 1975, and in that same year founded the Riyadh practice Beeah with Abdul-Rahman Al-Hussaini. Beeah has since built across Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, Pakistan and Djibouti, and Al-Shuaibi has taught design at King Saud University, chaired the Saudi Society for Architecture and co-edited an encyclopaedia of urban heritage. His best-known work is Al-Kindi Plaza in Riyadh's Diplomatic Quarter, which took the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989 for reasserting the traditional relationship between the mosque and the civic square.
