One of two French architects named in the record only by a first initial — A. Godard — credited alongside the German engineer Walter Harten on the Darul Aman Palace at Kabul, raised for Amanullah Khan between 1925 and 1927. Amanullah invited twenty-two German and French architects to the site; almost all of them, this one included, are otherwise undocumented in any source consulted for this pool, and no birth date, death date or other attributed building has surfaced. What the credit line does establish is that the palace’s design was not Harten’s alone: the surviving record names a Godard as a co-designer, not an assistant, of a three-storey neoclassical block of arcaded wings and a curved central bay that was, briefly, the most technically advanced building in Afghanistan.
